I hail from the Gods Own Country, Kerala. A state which gets more rains than any state in India. Abundant in greenery and multitudes of water bodies – ponds, streams, lakes, dams, rivers, back waters, beaches. And yet, I couldn’t swim!
One day the swimmer in me woke up. I quickly added ‘learning to swim’ to my bucket list.
It was easier said, than done! But I tried hard – friends, family, coach – all chipped in. Eventually, I graduated from someone who feared to even take a dip in the pool, to a swimmer.
However, I never could enjoy my swim. It was a strenuous process. I felt very tired and gasped desperately for breath after every lap. I realized, that if I am able to master one basic element of swimming I will be able to enjoy my swim better, that was – to relax, to let go. So simple, but so difficult at the same time.
One day someone told me, “why don’t you close your eyes and try, maybe the fear will wear off”! It worked, I had done it, I started enjoying my swim.
This event helped reiterate a very important life skill that day. The skill of “letting go”.
When I had closed my eyes; I had lost the fear of depth, the fear of breath. I was more confident, I enjoyed my swim, I used lesser energy, I could swim longer, and above all I was feeling very good.
At work too, at times we are overcome by our fears. The fear of uncertainty, the fear of loss, the fear of failure, the fear of future, etc
Let’s try and control our fears, and focus on the task at hand. Let’s focus on the effort and result will follow. Let’s believe in ourselves and Chuck the Fear!
